The 190 km from Melnik in Czechia to Dresden in Germany is by far the best the Elbe has to offer for cyclists. Add in the 110 km along the Vitava River from Prague and you have 300 km of truly idyllic cycling. Just do it!
#57 Slovakia and Czechia
A lot of this ride was pretty tough going. The poor condition of the roads, the confusing signage (where it existed), the hilly terrain (4,300 m climbed), the cold, wet and windy conditions and the surly natives, as well as my ongoing recovery from a hard fall, all conspired to make it quite a hard…
#56 The Austrian Danube
I struggle on cycling down the Danube with cracked ribs and a badly bruised thigh. The cycling is terrific and takes all the pain away, but the weather turns cold and wet.
#55 The German Danube
The Romantische Strasse (“Romantic Way”, as in the Romance architectural period from around 1750 to 1850) is not all it’s cracked up to be, to be honest. It’s just a marketing exercise! They tout it as this simply amaaa…zing cycle way, when it’s really a car route anyway, with a series of bike paths strung…

#53 Up the Rhine River
The start of my 2019 Grand European eBike Tour: a circular route of 3,500-km along the Danube and Elbe Rivers and through the Netherlands from north to south back to my starting point in Maastricht. In this episode, I set off from Maastricht and cycle east across the Rhine and Main Rivers to Frankfurt and…
#53 The Great Victorian Rail Trail
This post covers a full-circle bike trip I made over 3 days and 2 nights in early Spring of 2018, from my apartment in Abbotsford, Melbourne, to Maryville via Tallarook and the Great Victorian Rail Trail, and then back to Melbourne via the Acheron Way and the Warburton – Lilydale Rail Trail.
#52 Belgium west to east
The finale to my 5,100-km 2018 Grand Tour of Europe: a mad dash along the ‘Riviera’ of Belgium on the North Sea Coast, a stop-over in Bruges, through Gent and past Mechelen and Hasselt to Maastricht. Bruges is a great little city to spend some time in, but horribly expensive.
#51 Normandy |
It rained during the night there on the beach at Des Ondes, but I still managed to get away at 8.30 after allowing the tent dry out for an hour. I backtracked along the beach to where I’d arrived at the sea the day before and then continued on down the coast, drawn by the…
#50 The Channel Coast of Brittany
It was hilly and it was cold but at least it wasn’t raining and the scenery was, well…. very scenic.
